Graphic Fantastic

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

Loving these travel posters - the graphic style by Steve Thomas reminds us here at Calm of LNER railway posters of the 30s and 50s that are still much cherished here in North Yorkshire (although the locales depicted here are somewhat more exotic)! - Pluto is my favourite.

Liquid table

Drip drip drip!

Now this is clever and cool - furniture design at its best! It’s as if it was made for Calm Asylum (how do we get one?)
This is a table from designer John Nouanesing. It’s called Paint or die but Love Me

Calm introduce Lucy and Bart Amazing Art

Friday, July 25th, 2008

Calm introduce Lucy McRae and Bart Hess.
Their Art is “described as an instinctual stalking of fashion, architecture, performance and the body. They share a fascination with genetic manipulation and beauty expression. Unconsciously their work touches upon these themes, however it is not their intention to communicate this. They work in a primitive and limitless way creating future human shapes, blindly discovering low – tech prosthetic ways for human enhancement.”  (Taken from Lucy& Bart Blog)

I love my notebook

Tuesday, July 15th, 2008

Reg\'s moleskine doodles

Notebooks are like a retreat, a place you escape too. You create a notebook as you fill its pages. I use mine for…

Lists, Ideas, Thoughts, Important Numbers, Names I want to remember, Directions to places I’m going to, Receipts, Tickets, My as yet unwritten novel, WWWs I come across and want to remember, Things people say I like, Descriptions of feelings, Sketches, Doodles, Important dates, Inspirational texts, Rules to live by, A description of the guy I want to be remembered as when I’m dead (You should spend your whole life trying to be that guy), Passwords, Rants about everyone and everything, A copy of a Haiku Kate wrote about Horses.

Moleskinecity is an exhibition of as lots of notebooks created by architects, designers, artists, illustrators and writers.

Create your own notebook like Mambo brand-god Reg Mombassa:

Bored sticky tape employees…

Friday, July 11th, 2008

So you work in a factory that makes sticky tape…
What do you do when you have some spare time? The answer, have some fun.

(or is it modern art?)

Another great way to spend a lunch-break at Calm Asylum!

Chris Auld: Choice photographer

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

I’ve just found this great flash site that shows off Chris Auld’s  photography portfolio to perfection. Chris is a Geordie boy who does some great, high profile stuff and doesn’t cost the earth…

Awesome sculpture…

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

This is a video of very very cool, sculpture currently on display in the BMW museum in Munich.

Believe it or not each of the little 714 metallic is attached to a very fine wire which move to create some pretty cool looking effects.

In the last fifteen seconds the really cool bit happens - the balls drop to form the shape of a car.

Very cool!

Graffiti attack… (part 2)

Friday, June 20th, 2008

Just a little taster of the changes going on in the Calm Asylum.

The finished article.

(All that prep work and it only takes 34 seconds to complete. Yeh right!)
